The father of the Grape family successfully completed suicide by hanging in the families’ basement. The mother is a shut-in who is morbidly obese, and is unable to care for herself, or her family. There are three brothers and two sisters, the oldest brother Larry â€Å"escaped† and is not living in the home. The youngest brother Arnie is intellectually challenged and requires constant supervision. Gilbert is the second oldest brother, and has become the father figure of the family. The oldest sister Amy acts as the surrogate mother. The youngest sibling in the family is Ellen, she is a typical egocentric teenager. Ellen has learned what buttons to push to set off explosions in the family.
